An enjoyable way of sharing children's attainment of learning standards with parents, other staff and licensing agencies. Meaningful, authentic real world learning with nature inside, outside and beyond into the wilder spaces. This inspirational masterclass examines the place of consultation in the early years and primary sector and how it can impact upon the planning process, educationalists' practice and raise attainment. It is designed to look at the way we involve children from the age of 0 to 12 in planning their learning linked to curriculum.

In my professional career I have tried and tested many different methods of consulting and teaching children. I find that children are happiest and show the most growth when you give them the freedom to lead their learning. Traditionally, children view teaching as an adult-led practice in which the adult decides all activities and children do what they are told. Like adults, children learn best when they have a genuine interest or connection to what they are learning about. When we as the adult spend time listening to what children are interested in we can develop experiences or lessons around those interests.

Adults who work in a way that is design based — that is not working using a sequence of predefined work. The idea of design-based learning in Reggio Emilia is comparable to our North American concept of emergent curriculum. Thinking about emergent as an opportunity to follow the lead of the children and intentionally plan based on the interests that unveil themselves throughout the day. I have come across many educators this year who are trying different aspects of an emergent curriculum or an inquiry-based program. Often the reason is that the interests within the classroom can change quickly as do the students who are participating. The book becomes a shared document that belongs to all of the children in the class and the children can contribute in many different ways. The reason that I have found this method to be successful is that various children can contribute at different times, allowing the educator flexibility.
