Romeo and Juliet (Film 1996) Summary

Like virtually all works that can be said to occupy the tragic genre, Romeo and Juliet wrestles with philosophical notions of fate, fortune, and determinism. Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet are initially framed as "star-cross'd lovers," and "death-mark'd," in the play's opening verse. The first lines of Lurhmann's film—as well as his directorial decision to insert a flash-forward montage in the beginning scene—also make it immediately apparent to the viewer that their relationship will end in suicide, violence, and death. Throughout the film, Romeo and Juliet's actions amount to a desperate attempt to defy their own cursed circumstances in life—namely, being the progeny of different warring families—by striving to escape Verona and thus the feud's "fatal loins. William Shakespeare's original play Romeo and Juliet is not only one of the most famous love stories ever told, but one whose characters often pause to self-consciously examine and muse over the capricious nature and appalling power of love as a human emotion. Luhrmann's adaptation preserves this fact by introducing Romeo in the midst of extreme heartbreak, agonizing over his own susceptibility to love, and the feelings of grief, melancholy, and madness that love engenders in him, while strolling in solitude along Verona Beach.

It is an adaptation and modernization of William Shakespeare 's tragedy Romeo and Juliet. They instantly fall in love when Romeo crashes a party and meets Juliet, despite their being members of feuding families. The film was released on November 1, , by 20th Century Fox to commercial success, and was met with generally positive reviews. In Verona Beach, the Capulets and Montagues are rivals. The animosity of the older generation—Fulgencio and Gloria Capulet and Ted and Caroline Montague—is felt by their younger relatives. A gunfight between Montagues led by Benvolio , Romeo 's cousin, and Capulets led by Tybalt , Juliet 's cousin, creates chaos in the city. The Chief of Police , Captain Prince, reprimands the families, warning them that their lives "shall pay the forfeit of the peace".

Verona Beach is a gritty, run-down city bisected by two major organized crime families, the Capulets and the Montagues, who also happen to be bitter, deadly rivals. The hate between the two families runs far and deep, so much so that even the current clan patriarchs no longer know why they hate each other so much. Though the origin of the feud is lost, the enmity is strong and it profoundly affects the younger members of the clan. The ensuing battle results in massive property damage, given that they were shooting at each other in a gasoline station. The Chief of Police breaks up the fight, culminating in the arrest of both parties; during their arraignment Capt. Benvolio heads to the beach to meet up with Romeo whom he finds brooding over Rosaline, a woman he is smitten with. Together, they decide to pass the time playing pool.
