Swallows and Amazons - David R. Godine, PublisherOriginally published in the UK over a half century ago, these books are still eagerly read by children, despite their length and their decidedly British protagonists. We attribute their success to two facts: first, Ransome is a great storyteller and, second, he clearly writes from first-hand experience. Independence and initiative are qualities any child can understand and every volume in this collection celebrates these virtues. The author really does know how to write for children: in other words, he writes of what he himself delights in and so pleases without any effort both young and old. This book is both silvery present and golden retrospect.

The Swallows and Amazons series of children's books by Arthur Ransome is named after the title of the first book in the series. The 12 books involve adventures by groups of children during school vacations, mostly in England and Scotland , between the two World Wars. The stories revolve around outdoor activities, especially sailing. The series remains popular for its idyllic, yet often realistic, depiction of childhood and the interplay between youthful imagination and reality. It is part of the basis for a large tourist industry in the Lake District and Norfolk Broads , where many of the books are set. There are also several societies dedicated to the study and promotion of Ransome's work which are largely inspired by the series. The first was the Arthur Ransome Club in Japan.

I think the authority figures, as I recall, are "respected" as people, not as authority figures. Note that for Uncle Jim, said respect includes making him walk the plank after he effectively agrees that they can make him do so. If you'd care to post an example of said disrespect, I'd be interested in exploring that further. In particular, I think that there is a strong undercurrent of secretiveness with regard to informing authority figures, but nothing so broad as general disrespect. Also, let me add the Callum parents to the Walker parents as respected figures although they don't really seem to appear directly, we learn about them and their childrens' interaction with them. I have the whole set except Pigeon Post which I've read, of course.
